What is EMDR Therapy and How Does It Help You Heal?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an extensively researched, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process traumatic memories differently. Unlike traditional talk therapy that requires you to describe painful experiences in detail, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation – typically guided eye movements – while you briefly focus on the traumatic memory.

This process helps your brain reprocess the memory so it loses its emotional charge. The experience is still remembered, but the overwhelming feelings, physical reactions, and intrusive thoughts connected to it fade. Research shows EMDR therapy is often more effective and faster than traditional trauma treatments.

The World Health Organization, American Psychiatric Association, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Department of Defense all recognize EMDR as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. Millions of people worldwide have successfully healed from trauma using EMDR therapy.

What is EMDR therapy?

What is EMDR Therapy and How Does It Help You Heal?

Your brain has a natural way to recover from traumatic memories through communication between the amygdala (stress alarm), hippocampus (learning and safety), and prefrontal cortex (emotion control).

When trauma is too overwhelming, this natural healing process gets stuck. The traumatic memory remains unprocessed, causing you to feel like you’re reliving it every time something triggers the memory.

EMDR therapy helps your brain resume its natural healing process. During EMDR sessions, your therapist guides you through eight phases of treatment, including building coping skills before ever addressing the trauma itself.

The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy:

1. History and Treatment Planning

Your therapist learns about your experiences and creates a personalized treatment plan

2. Preparation

Learn coping skills and relaxation techniques to help you feel safe during processing

3. Assessment

Identify specific memories to target and the negative beliefs connected to them

4. Desensitization

Process traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) while briefly focusing on the memory

5. Installation

Strengthen positive beliefs to replace the negative ones connected to the trauma

6. Body Scan

Notice and process any remaining physical tension related to the memory

7. Closure

Return to a calm state before ending each session, with tools to maintain stability between appointments

8. Reevaluation

Check progress and identify any remaining issues to address

Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes. The number of sessions needed depends on whether you’re addressing a single traumatic event or complex trauma spanning years.

Who Benefits from EMDR Therapy in Kentucky?

You don’t need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit from EMDR therapy. If past experiences still cause emotional distress, physical reactions, or interfere with your daily life, EMDR can help.

The December 2021 tornado affected thousands of Kentuckians. If you experience anxiety during severe weather, have intrusive memories of the disaster, or struggle with loss and rebuilding stress, EMDR therapy processes these traumatic experiences.

Combat trauma, repeated exposure to violence, and traumatic incidents on the job respond well to EMDR therapy. Research shows 77% of combat veterans were free of PTSD after 12 EMDR sessions.

Sexual assault, domestic violence, childhood abuse, car accidents, or medical trauma all create unprocessed memories that EMDR helps resolve.

If you’ve tried traditional talk therapy for trauma without relief, EMDR’s different approach may help where other treatments haven’t.

How is EMDR Therapy Different from Traditional Talk Therapy?

You don’t have to talk about the trauma in detail

Unlike traditional therapy where you repeatedly describe painful experiences, EMDR therapy doesn’t require you to verbally process every detail. You hold the memory in mind while your therapist guides eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. This makes EMDR more tolerable for people who find it too painful to talk about their trauma.

Research shows EMDR therapy often produces results in fewer sessions than years of talk therapy. Studies found that 84-90% of single-trauma survivors no longer had PTSD after just three 90-minute EMDR sessions. Multiple trauma survivors saw significant improvement in six sessions.

EMDR doesn’t teach you to think differently or change your behavior through willpower. Instead, it activates your brain’s natural processing system, allowing traumatic memories to integrate adaptively without remaining “stuck” in their raw, unprocessed form.

FAQs About EMDR Therapy

How long does EMDR therapy take to work?

Research shows many people experience significant improvement in 6-12 EMDR therapy sessions. For single traumatic events, some studies found 84-90% of people no longer met PTSD criteria after just three 90-minute sessions. Complex trauma involving multiple experiences over years typically requires more sessions. Your therapist will discuss realistic timeframes based on your specific situation during your initial evaluation.

EMDR therapy is designed to be tolerable. Before processing any traumatic memories, your therapist spends several sessions teaching you coping skills and relaxation techniques. You remain in control throughout – you can pause or stop at any time. Most people find EMDR less emotionally overwhelming than traditional exposure therapy because you don’t verbally describe the trauma in detail. Physical sensations like eye fatigue from following movements are mild and temporary.

EMDR therapy is one of the most researched trauma treatments available. Over 30 controlled studies support its effectiveness. The World Health Organization, American Psychiatric Association, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and American Psychological Association all recognize EMDR as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. Millions of people worldwide have successfully used EMDR therapy since its development in the late 1980s.

Yes. EMDR therapy adapts well to telehealth delivery throughout Kentucky. Your therapist uses different methods for bilateral stimulation during virtual sessions, such as asking you to follow a moving object on screen, use self-tapping techniques, or listen to alternating tones through headphones. Research shows virtual EMDR therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions.

No. EMDR therapy doesn’t erase memories or make you forget traumatic experiences. The memory remains, but the overwhelming emotional charge, physical reactions, and intrusive thoughts connected to it decrease significantly. You’ll remember what happened without feeling like you’re reliving it. Most people feel relieved that they can finally think about the experience without intense distress.

No. While EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, you don’t need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from this therapy. EMDR helps with anxiety, depression, phobias, addiction, and other conditions where unprocessed traumatic memories or disturbing life experiences contribute to symptoms. If past experiences still cause emotional distress or interfere with your daily life, EMDR therapy may help.

Lumera Healthcare accepts most commercial insurance plans, Medicare, and Medicaid for EMDR therapy. We also offer sliding scale fees based on family size and household income for those without insurance. Contact our office to discuss your specific insurance coverage and payment options.

Your first sessions focus on building safety and preparing you for trauma processing. Your therapist learns about your history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. You’ll practice coping skills and relaxation techniques before ever addressing traumatic memories. Actual memory reprocessing doesn’t begin until you’re ready and have tools to stay grounded during the work.

Some people experience temporary increases in distress during active trauma processing, but your therapist teaches you techniques to manage this before starting memory work. EMDR therapy sessions always end with grounding exercises to help you return to a calm state. If processing becomes too overwhelming, your therapist can slow down, revisit coping skills, or adjust the treatment plan. Proper EMDR training emphasizes client safety throughout all phases.
