Depression That Doesn't Respond to Medication
Is More Common Than You Think

Millions of people take antidepressants and feel partial relief at best. Research shows that response rates for medication actually decrease with every subsequent treatment attempt. If you’ve been through two, three, or more medications without lasting improvement, that pattern has a name: treatment-resistant depression.

It doesn’t mean nothing will work. It means the approach needs to change.

For years, patients in Western Kentucky had to travel to Nashville, Louisville, or beyond to access the kind of advanced psychiatric care that actually addresses treatment-resistant depression at its source. That’s no longer the case.

Lumera Healthcare now offers NeuroStar TMS therapy in Paducah and Murray – making Western Kentucky home to the most complete advanced depression treatment available in this region.

What TMS Therapy Actually Does
- and Why It Works Differently

NeuroStar TMS Chair

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It works by delivering focused magnetic pulses to the areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation – areas that research shows are underactive in people with depression.

Unlike medications, which circulate through your entire body and can cause system-wide side effects, TMS is localized. It targets the source of the problem directly, without sedation, without systemic side effects, and without any downtime after your session.

What a NeuroStar TMS Session Looks Like

You sit in a comfortable chair. A licensed clinician places a treatment coil near your head. The session runs between 19 and 37 minutes. You’re awake the entire time. When it’s over, you can drive yourself home, go back to work, pick up your kids – whatever your day holds.

A standard NeuroStar treatment course involves approximately 36 sessions over six to nine weeks. Most patients begin noticing changes within the first two to three weeks.

What the Clinical Data Shows

NeuroStar TMS has the largest clinical data set of any TMS system for depression. In a large real-world outcomes study, 83% of patients who completed a full NeuroStar treatment course experienced measurable improvement in depression symptoms. 62% achieved full remission.*

In an NIMH-funded independent randomized controlled trial, patients treated with NeuroStar TMS were four times more likely to achieve remission compared to those receiving sham treatment.*

TMS Is Not Your Only Option - It's Part of a Larger Plan

Lumera is one of the most experienced providers in Western Kentucky offering TMS, esketamine therapy, and integrated behavioral health therapy under one roof. That distinction matters more than it might seem at first.

For patients with treatment-resistant depression, a single intervention – even a highly effective one – rarely tells the whole story. Research continues to explore how combining advanced treatments with active therapy may support better, more lasting outcomes. At Lumera, those conversations happen in-house. Your psychiatric team and your therapist are on the same page from day one.

About Esketamine Therapy at Lumera

Lumera offers esketamine treatment (SPRAVATO®) at our LivingWell Centre location in Paducah and our Murray location. Esketamine is an FDA-approved nasal spray treatment for treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation, administered in a clinical setting under medical supervision.

For patients whose depression has not responded to multiple antidepressants, esketamine works through a different mechanism than traditional medications – affecting glutamate receptors rather than serotonin – and may produce noticeable effects more quickly than standard antidepressant treatment.

What Makes Lumera Different From Other Providers in This Region

There are other providers offering pieces of what Lumera offers. None of them put it together the same way.

TMS + esketamine + integrated therapy in one organization

No other provider in Western Kentucky currently offers all three under one roof. For treatment-resistant patients, that integration changes the quality of care.

CARF accreditation is a third-party third-party quality standard. Many providers in this region don’t hold it. Lumera does.

At Lumera, your psychiatrist and your therapist communicate directly. Your treatment plan adjusts as a unit, not in separate silos.

No inpatient requirement. You keep your job, your routine, your responsibilities. TMS fits into your life rather than pulling you out of it.

TMS is covered by many insurance plans when medications haven’t provided adequate relief. We work with Medicaid, Medicare, and most major commercial carriers.

FAQs About TMS Therapy in Western Kentucky

What is TMS therapy and how does it work?

TMS therapy, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. These areas are typically underactive in people with depression. The magnetic pulses are similar in strength to those used in MRI machines. TMS is non-invasive, requires no sedation, and is administered while you remain awake and seated in a comfortable chair. Sessions last between 19 and 37 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

TMS therapy is generally considered for adults who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and have not experienced adequate relief from at least one antidepressant medication. NeuroStar TMS is also FDA-cleared for anxious depression and OCD. A licensed Lumera clinician will conduct a full evaluation to determine whether TMS is appropriate for your specific situation. TMS is not recommended for individuals with certain metal implants in or near the head.

TMS therapy is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare and a growing number of Medicaid plans, when antidepressant medications have not provided adequate relief and based on other factors. Lumera Healthcare accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and most major commercial insurance carriers. Our team verifies your coverage before treatment begins so you understand your out-of-pocket costs upfront. Contact us to discuss your specific plan.

A standard NeuroStar TMS treatment course involves approximately 36 sessions. These are typically scheduled five days a week over six to nine weeks. Each session runs between 19 and 37 minutes. Many patients begin to notice changes within the first two to three weeks of treatment, though completing the full course gives the best chance of lasting results. Interestingly, your friends or family might notice these improvements before you do. Because the magnetic pulses work by gradually changing your brain chemistry and pathways, response times vary from person to person.

TMS and esketamine are both advanced treatments for depression that work differently from traditional antidepressants. TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain activity directly, while esketamine (SPRAVATO®) is an FDA-approved nasal spray that targets glutamate receptors rather than serotonin.

Both are administered in a clinical setting under medical supervision. Lumera Healthcare offers both at select Western Kentucky locations – and for some patients, a combination approach may be discussed as part of an individualized treatment plan.

TMS therapy is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effect is mild scalp discomfort or a headache during or after the first few sessions, which typically decreases as treatment continues. Unlike antidepressant medications, TMS does not cause systemic side effects.

Because no sedation is used, you can drive yourself to and from appointments. Your Lumera clinical team will review your individual health history during the evaluation to discuss any relevant considerations.

Lumera Healthcare offers NeuroStar TMS therapy at our Paducah and Murray locations, serving patients across Western Kentucky including Mayfield and surrounding communities. With five total locations in the region – three in Paducah, one in Murray, and one in Mayfield – we have more TMS access points than any other provider in Western Kentucky.

Contact us to learn about availability at the location closest to you.

After completing a TMS treatment course, many patients maintain their results for an extended period. NeuroStar is currently the only Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation system with its long-term durability clinically established over 1 year.

Your Lumera care team will work with you on an ongoing treatment plan – which may include “maintenance” TMS sessions, medication management, or psychotherapy support – to help you maintain the progress you’ve made. Individual outcomes vary, and your clinician will discuss realistic expectations during your evaluation.
