When Weekly Therapy Isn't Enough -
and Inpatient Feels Like Too Much

There’s a gap in mental health care that a lot of people in Western Kentucky fall into. Weekly therapy isn’t providing enough structure to make real progress. But inpatient hospitalization – with its disruption to work, family, and daily life – feels like more than the situation calls for.

That gap is exactly what an Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to fill.

IOP provides a structured level of clinical care – multiple sessions per week, group and individual therapy, psychiatric oversight – while allowing you to sleep in your own bed, keep your job, and stay connected to your family. For many people in Western Kentucky, it’s the level of support that actually moves the needle, without requiring them to put their life on hold to access it.

Most IOP programs in Kentucky have moved to telehealth-only models. At Lumera Healthcare, our IOP is available in person across Paducah, Murray, and Mayfield – with the integrated care coordination that virtual-only programs can’t replicate.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Behavioral Health IOP

Our Behavioral Health IOP serves teens and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health conditions that haven't responded adequately to weekly outpatient therapy alone. The program combines group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric coordination into a structured weekly schedule that provides meaningful clinical intensity without requiring inpatient care.

For patients already working with a Lumera therapist or psychiatrist, IOP integrates directly into your existing care plan. Your IOP team and your outpatient providers share information and work from the same clinical picture - so nothing gets lost in transition.

Teen IOP Session

Teen IOP

Adolescents have different needs than adults in an IOP setting - different group dynamics, different clinical focuses, different communication styles.

Our teen IOP provides age-appropriate, structured mental health and substance use support for adolescents whose needs exceed what weekly individual therapy can address. We work alongside families throughout the process, because teenage recovery doesn't happen in a clinical vacuum.

Teen in therapy

Substance Use Disorder IOP

Our Substance Use Disorder IOP is designed for adults and teens in recovery who need more accountability and clinical structure than weekly sessions provide - but who don't require medical detox or residential treatment. The program addresses addiction alongside any co-occurring mental health conditions, because treating one without the other rarely produces lasting results.

Components typically include group therapy, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, individual therapy, and medication management when clinically appropriate. Participants continue living at home and, in most cases, maintain their work or school schedule throughout the program.

Why Western Kentucky Patients Choose Lumera Healthcare for IOP

In-Person IOP - Not Just a Video Call

Most statewide IOP programs have shifted to telehealth-only delivery. There are patients for whom virtual IOP works well. But for many people – particularly those dealing with serious depression, substance use, or trauma – the accountability and connection of in-person group work makes a real clinical difference. Lumera’s IOP is available in person in Paducah, Murray, and Mayfield.

At most facilities, IOP and outpatient therapy exist in separate silos. You finish IOP and get handed off to an outside provider with a summary letter and a good luck. At Lumera, your IOP team and your outpatient therapist and psychiatrist are part of the same practice. Transitions are coordinated. Nothing falls through the cracks between levels of care.

Many IOP providers specialize in one or the other. Lumera offers both Behavioral Health IOP and Substance Use Disorder IOP – and treats co-occurring conditions together rather than routing patients to separate programs for mental health and addiction. If you’re dealing with both, you shouldn’t have to split your care between two different facilities.

CARF accreditation is third-party validation that our clinical programs, processes, and outcomes meet nationally recognized standards. Most behavioral health providers in Western Kentucky don’t hold this accreditation. You can verify ours at carf.org.

We accept Medicaid, Medicare, most major commercial insurance, and EAP plans. Sliding scale fees are available for patients who qualify. If you’re unsure whether IOP is covered under your plan, call us before your first appointment and we’ll check your benefits.

FAQs About IOP in Western Kentucky

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

An Intensive Outpatient Program is a structured level of mental health or substance use treatment that sits between weekly outpatient therapy and inpatient hospitalization. IOP typically involves multiple therapy sessions per week – including group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric coordination – while allowing participants to continue living at home and, in most cases, maintain their work or school schedule. It’s designed for people whose needs exceed what weekly therapy can address, but who don’t require the round-the-clock structure of an inpatient setting.

IOP is typically appropriate for people who are not progressing with weekly outpatient therapy alone, who are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment and need continued structure, or who are managing mental health or substance use challenges that require more clinical intensity than a single weekly session provides. A Lumera clinician will conduct an assessment to determine whether IOP is the right level of care for your specific situation – and if it’s not, we’ll recommend what is.

Lumera Healthcare offers Behavioral Health IOP for teens and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, and related mental health conditions, and Substance Use Disorder IOP for teens and adults in recovery from addiction. Both programs address co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions together rather than treating them separately.

Standard outpatient therapy typically involves one session per week with an individual therapist. IOP involves multiple sessions per week across group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric coordination – providing significantly more clinical structure and contact hours. IOP also typically includes psychoeducation, skills training, and case management components that aren’t part of standard weekly therapy. The increased intensity is what makes it effective for people who need more than a weekly check-in.

Yes. Lumera Healthcare offers teen IOP for adolescents dealing with mental health or substance use challenges that require more structured support than weekly therapy provides. Our teen IOP uses age-appropriate group formats and involves families throughout the process. It’s available across our Western Kentucky locations.

Call (270) 310-9200 to ask about current availability and scheduling for adolescent IOP.

In most cases, yes. IOP is specifically designed to allow participants to maintain their daily responsibilities – work, school, family obligations – while receiving intensive clinical support. Program scheduling is structured to accommodate this. When you call to discuss program options, our team will walk you through available session times so you can assess what fits your schedule.

Completing IOP is a transition, not a finish line. At Lumera Healthcare, your IOP team coordinates directly with your outpatient therapist and psychiatrist – who are part of the same practice – to plan your step-down care. Most patients transition to standard outpatient therapy with an existing Lumera clinician after IOP, which means continuity of care rather than a handoff to a provider who doesn’t know your history.
